⚠️ Installing from outside the Play Store requires enabling a special setting on your device. This is safe for trusted apps like Provident Prep, but we recommend re-disabling the setting after installation as a good security habit.

Installation Guide

Three steps to get
up and running

Download the APK file

Tap the Download APK button above. Your browser will download the file — you may see a warning that this file type "may be harmful." This is a standard Android warning for all APK files. Tap Download anyway or OK to proceed.

Once downloaded, you'll find the file in your Downloads folder or your browser's download notification.

Allow installation from unknown sources

Android blocks APK installs by default. You'll need to grant permission — the exact steps vary by manufacturer:

When prompted after tapping the APK, tap Settings in the dialog, then enable Allow from this source. Or go to:

Settings→Apps→Special app access→Install unknown apps→ select your browser→ enable Allow from this source
Settings→Biometrics and security→Install unknown apps→ select your browser or Files app→ enable Allow from this source
Settings→Privacy→Special app access→Install unknown apps→ select your browser→ enable Allow from this source
🔒 Re-lock after installing

Once Provident Prep is installed, go back to that same setting and toggle it off again. This prevents other apps from silently installing software without your knowledge.

Open the APK and install

Tap the downloaded app-debug.apk file in your Downloads folder or browser notification. Android will show you an install screen — tap Install. The app will appear on your home screen within a few seconds.

Open Provident Prep and you're ready to start building your food storage!

Common Questions

Frequently asked

Yes — as long as you download it from a source you trust. Provident Prep is an open, community-built app with no data collection, no ads, and no malicious code. The Play Store listing is coming soon, at which point you'll be able to install it through the normal channel.
Not automatically — sideloaded APKs don't get Play Store updates. When a new version is released, this page will be updated and you can re-download and install over the existing app. Your data will be preserved. Once the Play Store listing is live, we recommend switching to that for automatic updates.
Android shows this warning for every APK downloaded outside the Play Store — it's not specific to Provident Prep. Tap "Download anyway" or "Install anyway" to proceed. If you have Google Play Protect enabled, it may also scan the file first, which is fine.
Not currently — iCloud sync is Apple-only. The Android version stores data locally on your device. Cross-platform sync is on our roadmap for a future release.
